Today
was a pretty laid back day. She didn’t have very much homework, just a few
problems from her math class that she hadn’t finished. So we took the first
hour and went to the computer lab to print off a bunch of pictures to color. While we were there we were talking to some
of the other students in 4H. There had been some serious drama between to other
girls that day which made Jaida laugh a lot. She doesn’t have very many
friends, especially in 4H, so she thought it was hilarious that other girls were
being dramatic with one another. I asked her about her friends and why she
thought she didn’t have very many in 4H, she said that she thought it was
because she’s shy. She doesn’t make an effort to try and fit in either. She
likes doing things her way. After we talked I watched how she interacted for a
little bit with some of the other girls and I realized that she kind of comes
across as snobby. She doesn’t get involved in the drama and doesn’t care to
either. She’s quiet but smart so she can be intimidating to others. I think
that’s part of the reason she doesn’t have very many friends either. Once we
finished coloring all our pictures we printed out we got together with 2 other
students and played Uno for the rest of the time.

Homework just got a little harder, they started doing algebra equations that I can’t remember how to do to save the life of me. We ended up walking down to her teacher’s office to get some help. It was very humbling to be re-taught by a teacher who was only 5 years old than me. We got the math all figured out though and worked on another one of her English assignments, which was about poetry and creating rhymes. After doing homework for the first full hour I was there I needed a break, Jaida did as well. So we decided to go outside. It was so nice! Jaida is probably 4’10, maybe, so it made playing basketball with her really fun! She’s actually pretty good at shooting so that made her feel better too. We played outside for about 20 minutes then it got a little too cold to be out there so we went back inside. We read Harry Potter together and colored for the remaining 40 minutes together. She talked a lot today about how much she loved reading. She was reading another book on her own that she explained to me. I asked why she liked reading so much and she said that it was because of the stories, they were exciting and fun. She liked being able to escape into a different world.

Today was a good day the first hour again was filled with figuring out her homework and attempting to do help her with her math. Like I’ve said before she’s really smart usually ends up figuring it out herself and then I have her reteach me how to do it. I honestly think this is good for her and her math because she’s explaining and applying what she’s learning. So I don’t feel too bad about not always being able to help her. When we got done with homework the first thing she wanted to do was play chess. It had been a couple weeks since we last played and she wanted to kick my butt in it again. Although, today I finally beat her! She was a little sad about it, but we played again and she won the second time around. During our time playing I asked about how she was doing in school and what classes she liked best. She of course had all A’s but her favorite class was her art class. She liked drawing and putting stuff together. She said she likes the hands on type stuff. After two games of chess she wanted to read some more Harry Potter. We finished out the rest of the time taking turns reading Harry Potter to one another.

Jaida didn’t have a lot of home again today, no surprise there. She had gotten most of it done during classes that day. So we finished up what she needed to get done than went outside to play. We played basketball together. We mostly just took turns shooting free throws, but we had a good time with it. She talked about how she didn’t like how short she was and I explained to her that I was always the tallest and how I’m still taller than average. It really hit me today just how important self-esteem is and how easily it’s effected during this stage of development. Her whole world revolves around what’s happening in her life and that’s all she can see. So it was kind of hard to explain to her that even though this is just a short amount of time, I understand how important this time is for her. It was a major eye opener to see it firsthand just how influential other people, and her situation is on her self-esteem. When we got done playing basketball we went to the computer lab to print of pictures to color and then took turns reading to each other Harry Potter.
