Day 8

March 3, 2015

When I first got there today I told Jaida that this was my last day there and she was so sad, which then made me really sad. I feel like we had kind of become sisters. I could tell she really looked up to me and was so touched by that. After I told her that and she got sad I told her that we had to make this today count and we could do whatever she wanted. All she wanted to do was read Harry Potter, which I thought was cute because that had kind of turned into our thing that we did together. We spent the first half hour doing her math homework and dove right into reading. About 2 minutes into reading she ran out of things to color so we ran across the hall to print out more pictures and then got back into our reading. Today she didn’t want to read, she just asked that I read the whole time because she liked how I read. During our last little bit of time of reading she said, “Thank you Chellcee for visiting with me each week. I really like it when you’re here.” Being pregnant and very emotional I almost started to cry. I’m so glad that she enjoyed our time together as much as I did. She was so much fun to get to know and it was such a great experience to be able to observe firsthand how adolescent think and act. At the end of our time she had colored me a bunch of pictures and told me I had to put them in my school binder. Today and the last couple of weeks have been so great! I’m a little sad to see this project end, but very grateful that I had the opportunity to meet and get to know her.

Days 4-7

February 3, 2015

Activities

-Homework
-Computer Lab
-Coloring
-Card Games

Today was a pretty laid back day. She didn’t have very much homework, just a few problems from her math class that she hadn’t finished. So we took the first hour and went to the computer lab to print off a bunch of pictures to color.  While we were there we were talking to some of the other students in 4H. There had been some serious drama between to other girls that day which made Jaida laugh a lot. She doesn’t have very many friends, especially in 4H, so she thought it was hilarious that other girls were being dramatic with one another. I asked her about her friends and why she thought she didn’t have very many in 4H, she said that she thought it was because she’s shy. She doesn’t make an effort to try and fit in either. She likes doing things her way. After we talked I watched how she interacted for a little bit with some of the other girls and I realized that she kind of comes across as snobby. She doesn’t get involved in the drama and doesn’t care to either. She’s quiet but smart so she can be intimidating to others. I think that’s part of the reason she doesn’t have very many friends either. Once we finished coloring all our pictures we printed out we got together with 2 other students and played Uno for the rest of the time.

Activities

-Homework
-Basketball
-Coloring
-Reading

Homework just got a little harder, they started doing algebra equations that I can’t remember how to do to save the life of me. We ended up walking down to her teacher’s office to get some help. It was very humbling to be re-taught by a teacher who was only 5 years old than me. We got the math all figured out though and worked on another one of her English assignments, which was about poetry and creating rhymes. After doing homework for the first full hour I was there I needed a break, Jaida did as well. So we decided to go outside. It was so nice! Jaida is probably 4’10, maybe, so it made playing basketball with her really fun! She’s actually pretty good at shooting so that made her feel better too. We played outside for about 20 minutes then it got a little too cold to be out there so we went back inside. We read Harry Potter together and colored for the remaining 40 minutes together. She talked a lot today about how much she loved reading. She was reading another book on her own that she explained to me. I asked why she liked reading so much and she said that it was because of the stories, they were exciting and fun. She liked being able to escape into a different world.

Activities

-Homework
-Reading
-Chess

Today was a good day the first hour again was filled with figuring out her homework and attempting to do help her with her math. Like I’ve said before she’s really smart usually ends up figuring it out herself and then I have her reteach me how to do it. I honestly think this is good for her and her math because she’s explaining and applying what she’s learning. So I don’t feel too bad about not always being able to help her. When we got done with homework the first thing she wanted to do was play chess. It had been a couple weeks since we last played and she wanted to kick my butt in it again. Although, today I finally beat her! She was a little sad about it, but we played again and she won the second time around. During our time playing I asked about how she was doing in school and what classes she liked best. She of course had all A’s but her favorite class was her art class. She liked drawing and putting stuff together. She said she likes the hands on type stuff. After two games of chess she wanted to read some more Harry Potter. We finished out the rest of the time taking turns reading Harry Potter to one another.

-Homework
-Basketball
-Computer Lab
-Reading

Jaida didn’t have a lot of home again today, no surprise there. She had gotten most of it done during classes that day. So we finished up what she needed to get done than went outside to play. We played basketball together. We mostly just took turns shooting free throws, but we had a good time with it. She talked about how she didn’t like how short she was and I explained to her that I was always the tallest and how I’m still taller than average. It really hit me today just how important self-esteem is and how easily it’s effected during this stage of development. Her whole world revolves around what’s happening in her life and that’s all she can see. So it was kind of hard to explain to her that even though this is just a short amount of time, I understand how important this time is for her. It was a major eye opener to see it firsthand just how influential other people, and her situation is on her self-esteem. When we got done playing basketball we went to the computer lab to print of pictures to color and then took turns reading to each other Harry Potter.

Days 1-3

January 20, 2015

Activities:

-Homework
-Coloring
-Reading
-Chess

Today was the first day being with Jaida. She is the sweetest little thing in the world. She’s super smart too so I feel a little intimidating attempting to tutor her and help her with her homework. But today was extremely fun. The first hour we worked on homework. It’s been quite a few years since I’ve done middle school math, but wow, it was a lot harder than I was expecting. When we finished doing math I asked if she wanted to color, read, or play a game and she wanted me to read to her while she colored.

So we picked up Harry Potter and I started reading while she colored. We read for about another 30-40 minutes. After reading to her we talked about the book. She said, “I really wish Hogwarts was a real place. Like, I would be such a good witch!” This made me laugh but in all honesty I couldn’t agree more! We finished up talking and she started telling how she loves chess. She’s in the chess club at school, has competed in a couple of tournaments. She’s legit. So I told her I had never learned the proper way to play! We spent the rest of the time playing chess and her teaching me all about it.

Activities:

-Homework
-Computer Project

I just want to start today off by saying how much middle school math is kicking my butt. Jaida is a very good student too so she ended up teaching me how to do her homework today. She also had an English assignment that I could actually help her with so that was a boost to myself esteem. We did homework for the first 40 minutes than decided to go to the computer lab to work on a computer project she had to do for 4H. A part of 4H they have the student run for offices to help the mentors & directors with stuff that needs to get done. So Jaida decided that she wanted to run for Class Historian which meant that she would be in charge of taking pictures of stuff that happens during program as well as run the class store.

She was super excited and felt pretty confident about it until she found out someone would be running against her. It was so sad to see her confidence leave her face when this other student said they were going to run. Jaida isn’t the most confident person to begin with so, I felt I needed to help her as much as I was allowed so she would feel better about her presentation. We put together a little poster of why she was be a good historian, was some of her previous experience was, and how she had the skills to do the best job. We spent the rest of the time that day practicing what she would say and making her poster look great.

Classroom Pictures:
These are the rules of the classroom. Before each class begins, the students read this and the pledge blow.

This is the 4H pledge.

Each table has a set of materials that the students are allowed to use whenever they want or to help them with their homework

Activities

-Homework
-Coloring
-Reading
-Chess

I definitely feel like my middles school math skills are improving, either that or Jaida is just a really good teacher. Today she didn’t have much homework to do so we focused on other fun activities we could do together. Since it had been some time since we read Harry Potter she decided to do that. I read to her again while she colored printed off coloring pictures from the internet for about an hour.

After that we talked about what we had read about and how much we like Hermione. You could tell after talking why Jaida looks up to her so much. Jaida is very quiet but also very smart, so she can easily relate to her character. The more I get to know Jaida the more I remember how much I hated middle school. This is such a rough time for them, they’re awkward, kids are mean, and they themselves are kind weird. It’s true that Jaida, I think, is pretty mature for a 12 year old but, there will be times where she’ll say something and I’m reminded of her real age. After we finished talking about the book I asked if she would play chess with me again and she got super excited! She looked at me like that was a dumb question, of course she wanted to play her game. We played chess and talked for the rest of the time.
